Animals – Freiburg im Breisgau – Study on the use of species detection dogs – Society

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – How specially trained dogs can help in the study of wild animals was investigated in a pilot study by the Forest Research and Research Institute Baden-Württemberg (FVA). So-called species detection dogs are already being used worldwide to track down lynxes and capercains using feathers, hair or faeces, as wildlife biologist Julia Taubmann explained in Freiburg on Tuesday.

With the study “Species detection dogs in wildlife monitoring”, the FVA has evaluated various projects in the past two years. “Not every dog and not every person are suitable for this,” said Taubmann. The investigation had worked out what to consider when choosing a dog or what the handler had to bring.

According to the FVA, sniffer dogs are already used to monitor lynxes, wolves or capercaillie. But the dogs could also help in many other cases, for example to detect bats and forest pests or to record martens.
