The head of the National Institution for Human Rights, Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, referred in his speech to “Al-Bilad”; Health care in places of detention is witnessing a great development, as the step that the institution called for in taking the Ministry of Health to supervise the provision of health services to inmates of reform and rehabilitation centers has a significant impact on the quality of services provided to them, despite the fact that health care was previously provided by the Ministry of Interior Considering that the Ministry of Health is an authority with competence in this field, and it has specialized medical treatment teams working to provide a safe health situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and because correctional centers are considered closed institutions and are not always available in them like the care available abroad, and international human rights instruments call for Countries around the world aim to enable inmates to obtain health care that is at least equivalent to the care available to those outside places of detention, which the NIHR sees as one of the reasons for transferring health care to the management of government hospitals.

Al-Derazi added that this decision would preserve the health of all inmates of reform and rehabilitation centers, and promote the general health provided to them, and this is a point that is credited to the Ministry of Interior in developing the health care infrastructure for inmates in general by transferring this service to a competent authority, to provide care services. health care system independently of the management of detention centres, which is the common goal of improving health for all in general, while ensuring respect for human rights and dignity.

Al-Derazi indicated that the number of complaints that have reached the institution’s call center since the beginning of the current year 2023 has reached 336 cases, which varied between 103 complaints and 214 assistance, in addition to 19 monitoring cases, as all the cases that were dealt with related to inmates in reform and rehabilitation centers or Pretrial detention, whether for women or men, most of which revolve around not receiving treatment and health care, and there are cases related to receiving treatment from a general practitioner who is not
