Yesterday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug “zuranolone” for the treatment of postpartum depression, making it the first oral pill approved in the United States specifically for this disease, which affects about half a million women every year in the country.
Postpartum depression is a serious mental illness that affects about 10 to 15 percent of women who give birth in the United States and sometimes begins during pregnancy, according to the New York Times.
And the “FDA” announced that the treatment, which will be sold under the brand “Zurzuvae”, has been approved and can be taken once a day for 14 days.

Despite the new treatment’s promising results, the chair of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Chan School of Medicine said she would likely not recommend Zurzuvae for patients with recurrent, long-term depression.
