Abnormal heat has taken over Europe. Will it get worse?

In Italy they refresh themselves as best they can

June continues to break temperature records not only in Ukraine, but throughout Europe, and this is not the limit.

On June 24, in Kiev, the average daily air temperature was + 28.1 ° C, which is 1.6 ° C higher than the record temperature for this day in 1924. The maximum air temperature in the afternoon in the capital rose to + 35.5 ° С, exceeding the previous record for this day in 1924 by 2.3 ° С, and for June as a whole by 0.5 ° С.The previous historical maximum for the first month summer held since 1885.

And this situation is not only in Ukraine, temperature records are beating in other European countries as well. Why is this happening?

Italy

In many regions of Italy, the temperature remains at around 40 degrees, and in some regions in the south – almost 45 degrees. The hottest regions are Sicily, Calabria and Puglia, where the heatwave is expected to peak on Thursday and Friday.

The Sicilian authorities have already reported on Wednesday that in some areas the temperature has reached +44.5 degrees.

High humidity and dusty skies have created stifling conditions in the southern regions as warm air currents came from North Africa this week.

“The cold air mass over Western Europe meets very hot currents over the central Mediterranean, caused by the subtropical anticyclone, which also brings with it dust from the desert that envelops our peninsula,” says meteorologist Giulio Betti.

Russia

On June 23, 2021, an absolute temperature maximum was recorded in Moscow for the entire June – the air in the city, according to the Hydrometeorological Center, warmed up to 34.8 degrees. Prior to this, a record temperature for June in Moscow was considered to be 34.7 degrees, which was recorded on June 21, 1901.

Forecasters predict that high temperatures will persist until the end of the week, and intermittent rains are not possible until Saturday, June 26.

Global warming is a worldwide trend, but scientists note that it is warming in Russia two and a half times faster than throughout the planet as a whole. Sometimes it can turn into records.

Germany

In Germany, the thermometer also approached +35 – +37 degrees.

The authorities overseeing the agricultural sector have asked the German animal owners to provide them with shade and sufficient water. Farmers who are engaged in poultry breeding are obliged to carefully monitor their wards at this time, since it is the birds that react more sharply to high temperatures than all animals.

Not only Europe

In America’s California and Texas, power systems are on the verge of collapse due to extremely hot weather.

Forest fires started. The US National Weather Service warns that temperatures could exceed 39 degrees Celsius in five states: California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and parts of Colorado.

In 2020, the United States experienced devastating wildfires, recognized as the largest in area in recent history. In California, the effect of an orange sky obscured by a reddish haze arose. Because of this unusual phenomenon, the lights had to be turned on even during the day, and in San Francisco, cars moved with their headlights on.
