A TikTok star dominated the Brit Awards. Raye accepted the award for album of the year with her grandmother

For a long time, the twenty-six-year-old native of London only guested as a vocalist in dance compositions by other authors. In 2021, she terminated her contract with major label Polydor, who still did not want to release her debut album, and she complained si on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter. That’s when she decided to try to break through on her own. Now he’s a star.

She already received seven nominations at the Brit Awards, a record in itself. On Saturday, she converted all but one. She scored with the album My 21st Century Blues and the song Escapism, also became the discovery of the year. “You don’t understand what this means to me,” said an emotional Raye as she accepted the album of the year award alongside her grandmother. “I’m so proud of this album. I love music. I’ve always wanted to be an artist more than anything. And now I’m an artist with the album of the year,” she added.

The songs from Raya’s album started to spread first on the social network TikTok, in particular slightly accelerated excerpt from the single Escapism. Users of the social network started adding it to their own videos not only about breakups or love troubles. “If you want to hear it, I’ll give you context / I’m in a really bad situation / The guy I love said yesterday we need to talk / He told me it’s over, such a stupid decision,” Raye sings in English on the part of the track, which became popular on TikTtok. Surprisingly, it is not a chorus.

How complements the British newspaper Guardian, the record so far in the history of the Brit Awards represented a victory in four categories. This was previously achieved by Harry Styles, the singer Adele and the band Blur. This year, six women were among the ten nominees in the most watched artist of the year category, which represents a change from last year, when only men applied for the award.

Producers of electronic music with a mixture of soul and funk Jungle became the group of the year. In the category of alternative or rock, Bring Me the Horizon rejoiced, beating veterans Blur or The Rolling Stones.

The best rapper was Casisdead, who, after spending almost twenty years in the British underground, made his debut last year with an album called Famous Last Words. The international artist of the year is the American singer SZA, who beat Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus, among others. On the other hand, she takes home the prize for the best international song of the year Flowers. Girl trio Boygenius became the international group of the year.

The organizers of the Brit Awards chose the singer Kylie Minogue as the global music icon, and the indie-rock band The Last Dinner Party, who will perform at Prague’s Metronome festival in June, as the rising stars. The Brit Awards are organized by the professional music association British Phonographic Industry. Most of the winners are chosen by voting by around 1,200 representatives of the British music industry, including representatives of record companies, artists, journalists and producers.
