The British, number 150 in the world and first qualifier coming so far in a major, beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, 73rd in the WTA table, by 6-4 and 6-3 in the final.
It was the 18-year-old youngest tennis player’s victory at Flushing Meadows against a freshly-played 19-year-old.
