Biden in a telephone conversation with Zelenski promises support for Ukraine

In a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Biden “reaffirmed the United States’ readiness to respond decisively with its allies and partners if Russia pursued a further invasion of Ukraine,” the White House said in a statement.

Biden “emphasized the US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

According to the statement, Biden Zelenski confirmed that Washington was “looking for opportunities for additional macroeconomic support for the Ukrainian economy, which is under pressure due to Russia’s military tensions”. The Communication does not elaborate on the possibilities for assistance.

Although Kiev criticized the US call for its citizens to leave Ukraine, Biden said in a conversation with Zelenski that the US embassy in Kiev was “still open and fully operational.”

Mr Biden expressed support for Ukraine’s and Russia’s talks this week to intensify a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, where clashes between Ukrainian army and Russian-backed militants continue, stressing that no diplomatic agreement will be reached without Ukraine’s involvement.

Zelensky wrote on Twitter that he had a “long telephone conversation” with the president of the United States, in which he “discussed recent diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and agreed on joint action in the future.”

The Ukrainian president thanked Biden for US armaments supplies, adding that “financial support for Ukraine was being considered”.

Biden has sought a united Western response to Russia’s military pressure on Ukraine, which has angered Moscow with its efforts to move closer to the West. Russia has concentrated more than 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border.
