Halloween March Against East River Park Redesign

Activists and residents of the Lower East Side held a Halloween march to protest the city’s plan to redesign East River Park.

The remodel is part of the East Coast Resilience Project (ESCR) that was approved by the Council in 2019.

The plan seeks to rebuild open spaces along the East Side of Manhattan to expand protections against flooding.

This project is scheduled to begin demolishing parts of the park this Monday. And since the beginning of the protests, the municipal government has been required to have greater transparency in the management of the project.

Residents of the East Side have continued to protest against the project that could last several years and which they consider an ecological attack since it will reduce the trees of the community.

The municipal authorities assure that the Department of Parks of the city will plant another 1,000 trees in the surrounding community after remodeling the parks.
