TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Consumption of foods that are rich in calories, fatty and sweet has become popular among today’s society – especially the younger generation. Unhealthy food or junk food which is loaded with saturated fat, high sodium and sugar content makes us more prone to health problems like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and others.

The urge to eat unhealthy foods is caused by several reasons such as stress, emotional eating and food euphoria. Another reason behind this is that these foods are made in such a way that they stimulate the feel-good center in our brain which triggers us to eat more.

The first step to healthy eating is eliminating all the cues that encourage eating junk food. In addition, having a healthy eating plan and providing our kitchens with healthy snack options can prove to be beneficial.

Here are three meal replacements when the craving for junk food increases

  1. Almond
Almonds are healthy and tasty and can be eaten raw, marinated or roasted. In addition, it is very convenient to carry and store at home. Almonds are low on the glycemic index and contain nutrients like fiber, good fats, vitamin E and minerals like magnesium and potassium. Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) has been shown to provide anti-aging properties that can benefit skin health.

A recent study conducted by the University of Leeds, which focused on the influence of almonds on appetite control, established how almonds could be beneficial for weight management. The results show that snacking on almonds also causes a suppressed subconscious desire (“implicit urge”) to eat other high-fat foods, which is great for anyone trying to control their weight.

  2. Fresh fruit
Fresh fruits like berries, bananas, and apples are good alternatives to junk food. Packed with essential nutrients, fiber and antioxidants that make a good addition to our diet. Berries are high in fiber and contain less sugar. On the other hand, bananas serve as a rich source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, dietary fiber and potassium. Apples are a good source of fiber and vitamin C. Apples also contain antioxidants, such as vitamin E, and polyphenols that contribute to the fruit’s many health benefits.
  3. Yogurt
Unsalted yogurt is a great source of protein and calcium which is beneficial for our bones and muscles. It also contains B complex vitamins, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium making it a great addition to our diet. In addition, considering the content of probiotic bacteria, yogurt is also good for gut health. Eating yogurt boosts metabolism and provides a feeling of fullness, making it a great substitute for cravings junk food.
