20 minutes – Sony surprises with an electric car

No details on the PlayStation 5 on the menu, except the presentation of the official logo of the future video game console and some figures (106 million PS4 sold and 103 million monthly active users of PlayStation Network), at the conference Sony at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES). The Japanese glove created the surprise, the day before the opening, on Tuesday, of the hi-tech show in Las Vegas, preferring to bet on mobility. Sony has indeed presented a first prototype electric car from its new project called Vision-S.

This prototype embodies our contribution to the future of mobility, said the president and CEO of the Kenichiro Yoshida group when he unveiled the vehicle. It embeds different technologies for comfort and entertainment. It is notably equipped with 33 sensors, including CMOS image sensors and ToF (time of flight) sensors. They are used to detect and recognize people and objects inside and outside the electric car.

The vehicle, which displays a large panoramic screen acting as a dashboard over the entire front width, was produced in collaboration with several partners, primarily with the Austrian firm Magna Steyr, but also the German Bosch, Continental and ZF, as well as Qualcomm and Nvidia. The luxurious connected sedan also offers 360 degree sound and other screens for passengers. It is currently presented as a modular demo platform. Sony has not talked about marketing.
