$ 100 Incentive Vaccine Program Begins in NYC

The markings on the pavement, the signs and the workers ready from the first hours that this immunization center opened … however, there was no line and not many people were vaccinated.

It has been the first day of the program in which the city gives prepaid cards of one hundred dollars to those who get the first dose of the vaccine …. The city assures that 450 people had been vaccinated for the first time on Friday morning.

At this center, at least 60 New Yorkers had appointments to get immunization but many of them for the second dose. Neighbors say they are concerned about how little interest people are.

“I totally see the empty centers, people do not want to believe that this is really real that if they do not get vaccinated they can have many problems,” said neighbor Mario Calderón.

Calderón was vaccinated here months ago with the doses of Pfizer and he said that today when he passed the vaccination center the workers told him about the reward of one hundred dollars.

Others like Merci say they don’t get immunizations even if they are offered incentives.

“In if I feel that this is getting the virus itself, I don’t even get the Flu … Personally, I have not been vaccinated. I take care of myself, I protect myself. I had my tests done three times, everything came out negative, ”said Merci.

This is not the first time the city has offered incentives to get vaccinated, it has previously issued lottery tickets or MetroCards.

Today there is more urgency on the part of the authorities so that more people are vaccinated due to the increase in infections by the Delta variant.

This worries some neighbors like Miguel Correa, who has already been vaccinated.

“Some people don’t want to, I don’t know if they’re afraid, for me the best thing is to get vaccinated to try to stop this … it’s the only one that stops the pandemic and one feels safer like that,” Correa said.

The city continues efforts to combat the virus with vaccination and possible changes in mask use next week.
