Yvelines: in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, PSG is on every street corner

Half a century is worth celebrating. So for the 50 years of PSG, Saint-Germain put on the colors of his football club. Since the start of the school year, the message “We love PSG” has been displayed on roundabouts. Place Royale has even been renamed “Place des Légendes”. And this Wednesday, it is a big photo exhibition which is installed outside for a month. Fifty shots for fifty candles, all taken by Christian Gavelle, the club’s official photographer. One way to remember that Saint-Germain remains the cradle of PSG.

You don’t have to be a strong supporter to appreciate. Claude is “not particularly interested in football”. “But that’s part of the city’s identity,” he admits. On the terrace, a waiter comments: “Often, tourists ask me how to get to Camp des Loges”. But for many in town, the club has changed in recent years. And even before the departure of the pros for the future training center of Poissy, it reigns like a little air of nostalgia.

“At the time, there was a different vibe,” recalls Albert, 84.

Albert, planted in front of a black and white photo of a friendly match in 1977 is even raised. The 84-year-old man recalls having “known the beginnings” of PSG. But today, he no longer wants to be interested in it. “At the time, there was a different vibe,” he explains. We followed them, we brought them up, as if they were family. Now the only thing that motivates them is the dough. Not Saint-Germain ”.

At the Le Soubise bar, we also remember the 1990s when it was not uncommon to see Raï and others “come for breakfast”. Even today, you can still come across ancient glories, such as Safet Sušić, the legend of the 1980s. “He comes every morning for a coffee,” says Frédéric, the barman. I was still discussing it with him this morning: things were less publicized and the players were more accessible ”.

Postponed festivities

The number 10 of the former Yugoslavia was also in the spotlight of a special evening alongside Jean Djorkaeff and Luis Fernandez, two other glories. “It was shifted, just like the big barbecue that we had planned at Camp des Loges,” explains Arnaud Péricard, the DVD mayor of Saint-Germain. And the chosen one to clarify, referring to the future move of the first team: “There is no bitterness. I love this club and its history is rooted with us. But PSG does not belong to a city. It is the club of Franciliens ”.
