Xiaomi Electric Car Agenda Unveiled, Collaborating with Great Wall

One of the largest mobile phone manufacturers in the world, Xiaomi, reportedly planning to make electric car using Great Wall Motor’s production facilities. The project’s first model is said to appear in 2023.

This information appears in the report Reuters who got information from three people with knowledge of the plan.

It is said that Xiaomi is targeting mass production of electric cars which will enhance its position as a producer of technology products. Meanwhile, Great Wall, which has never offered manufacturing services to another company, will provide technical consultancy to accelerate this plan.

The two companies plan to announce cooperation in the development of electric cars as soon as possible, and this is predicted to be announced next week. But both are reluctant to comment at this time when confirmed.

The Xiaomi electric car project is said to be able to expand revenue which has been dominated by the mobile phone business with a thin margin. The electric car is thought to have the potential to provide Xiaomi with a stronger source of income throughout the year.

Apart from Xiaomi, a number of technology companies also have strategies to develop electric cars. Before the news of Xiaomi emerged, Apple was reportedly exploring the world of electric cars.

Not only Apple, the Chinese search engine company, Baidu, also announced plans to manufacture electric cars in an affiliation with the automotive company Geely.

Xiaomi co-founder and chief executive Lei Jun claims the company’s expertise in hardware production can help accelerate the design and production of electric cars.

Unlike some of its competitors, Xiaomi also produces a number of products outside of mobile phones such as smart TVs, rice cookers, air purifiers to scooters.
