Xbox Series X/S Falls Behind PS5 in Sales, Data Suggests

We all sort of know that Sony’s PS5 is outselling Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S. Sony gives us sales data, while Microsoft has chosen to remain quiet about console sales for years. However, new data now indicates that the Xbox Series X/S is significantly lagging behind the PS5, with possibly two PS5s sold for every one Xbox.

Ever since 2016, when Microsoft stopped reporting hardware sales, there has been a mystery surrounding Xbox sales figures. However, information from Microsoft’s regulatory battles has revealed that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by a 2:1 ratio.

Examining the Financial Report

According to a financial report released by Take-Two Games, approximately 77 million “Gen 9” consoles have been sold as of December 2023. Gen 9 covers both the Xbox Series X/S and PS5. By looking at Sony’s stats, which revealed that 50 million PS5s had been sold to consumers, it can be estimated that Xbox has only sold about 25 million consoles worldwide. This indicates that the PS5 has likely outsold the Xbox Series X/S at about a 2:1 ratio.

Impact on the Xbox Brand’s Future

While this sales data may not have stirred up a significant reaction normally, it has sparked concern among Xbox fans and content creators who are awaiting future announcements about exclusivity deals. Reports suggesting that major Xbox exclusives, such as Starfield, might be available on the PS5 have triggered significant debate and speculation. Xbox fans are eagerly anticipating the news that Xbox boss Phil Spencer will share next week, hoping to gain insight into the future direction of the brand.

With each new piece of data highlighting the relatively weaker sales of Xbox consoles, worries continue to mount among fans. Concerns about the possibility of Microsoft shifting its focus away from consoles and adopting a multi-platform strategy have exacerbated the anticipation for next week’s announcements. The Xbox community eagerly awaits further clarity and direction about the future of their beloved brand.
