Dhe US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg are currently having a very personal discussion. Mnuchin advised the 17-year-old that she should first improve her economic knowledge before she schooled America in which plants investors should put their money into.

“Is she the chief economist or who is she? I’m confused, ”said Mnuchin at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. “After studying economics at the university, she can come back and explain it to us.”

Mnuchin’s attack followed only two days after Donald Trump’s WEF opening speech, in which the US president had ridiculed climate activists as doom prophets.

US Treasury Secretary: “There are many other important issues”

The Swedish climate activist Thunberg, together with 20 other young climate activists, has called on all participants in the World Economic Forum to stop the “madness” of ongoing investments in the research and promotion of fossil fuels and to “completely separate” them immediately.

Mnuchin said that many economies are transforming into more efficient and cleaner forms of energy without investor pressure. Anyone now demanding a complete exit must consider the harsh consequences for growth and jobs.

In addition, he does not believe that there are only a few years left to prevent a climate catastrophe. “There are many other important issues that threaten civilization,” he said, citing the health and proliferation of nuclear weapons. “Young people have to understand that the climate is an issue that has to be linked to many other things.”

Greta later replied Mnuchin on Twitter: “My year off ends in August, but you don’t need a degree in economics to realize that our remaining carbon budget for the 1.5 degree target and ongoing subsidies and investments in fossil fuels is not fit together, ”she wrote coolly.

“So either tell us how we can achieve this reduction, or tell future generations and those already affected by the climate disaster why we should give up our climate commitments.”

Climate protection is the dominant topic at this year’s economic summit. However, the Americans in particular seem to want to set a different agenda. In an interview, US President Trump advised Thunberg to focus on “other countries” where emissions are increasing.

Statistics show that 60 percent of the increase in emissions of harmful greenhouse gases comes from China and another 20 percent from India.
