Woman Killed After Being Struck by a Train in Co Sligo

A tragic incident involving a train in Co Sligo has claimed the life of a woman in her 40s. Another woman in her 20s is currently in a serious condition at Sligo University Hospital. It was disclosed that the fatal accident took place on the 15.05pm service from Sligo to Dublin along the train line at Knocks Park, Ballisodare, at approximately 4 PM.

Investigation Underway

The victim’s body remains at the scene while Gardaí officers have notified the local Coroner about the incident. Forensic Collision Investigators are en route to thoroughly examine the area and gather relevant evidence.

Impact on Passengers

Around 100 passengers boarded the ill-fated train on this particular journey. While the train has since been brought to a halt between Ballisodare and Collooney, all passengers have successfully disembarked.

An Eyewitness Account

A distressed young man who witnessed the tragic accident was able to exit the train and shared his first-hand experience with local Sligo county councillor Thomas Healy. The passenger, initially unaware of why the train had stopped, was reportedly extremely upset upon realizing the true extent of what had occurred.

Authorities Respond

Expressing his concern for those affected, Cllr Healy stated, “I am aware that a tragedy has occurred on the track. My thoughts are with the families and also with the driver of the train.”

Road Diversions in Ballisodare

As emergency services work at the scene, road closures and diversions have been implemented at the roundabout in Ballisodare. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes to minimize disruption during their commute.
