Britney Spears will remain under legal guardianship until February 2021, after a court in California (USA) has extended the rule by which her father controls the public and private life of the singer for more than a decade.
After a hearing held this week behind closed doors, the court decided to extend legal guardianship over Spears despite the fact that her team assured that the artist expresses her “strong opposition” to her father, James Spears, being her sole legal guardianthe entertainment magazine Variery reported on Friday.
According to the documents of this process, the court has asked Spears’ lawyers to register before September 18 a petition so that the father ceases to be the only figure authorized to control the decisions of his life.
Exactly what the singer’s legal team requested is that said guardianship function continue in the hands of the specialized lawyer Jodi Montgomery, who assumed the role a year ago temporarily when the father suffered several health problems.
In the application, the artist’s representatives assure that the guardianship is at a point “that must change substantially” to “reflect the main changes in her lifestyle and her new desires.”
They also state that the request that Montgomery continue in that role does not imply that Spears waives “in any way her right to request the termination of the same.”
The hearing to study this case is scheduled for mid-October, for which the parent has already submitted documentation stating that his 38-year-old daughter is “substantially incapable of managing her financial resources or of resisting fraud or a undue influence “.
Despite the fact that the case arouses great media attention under the “#FreeBritney” (Freedom for Britney) movement, under which several protesters even protested in the Los Angeles courts calling the measure a “kidnapping”, Spears has never referred explicitly to it.
In one of her latest Instagram posts, the “Toxic” author wrote, “I want to thank all my dear sweet and true fans for being so damn wonderful. I can feel your hearts and I know you can feel mine. Thank you for your support for”.
But in the video that accompanies the text, Spears says things that are not related such as that her favorite holiday is Halloween, her favorite subject is history and that her bedside book is “A Good Woman” by Danielle Steel, published in 2008.
It was precisely in 2008 when the father assumed her guardianship, after she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and lost custody of her children.
It all dates back to the infamous year 2007 for the “Toxic” singer, marked by erratic behavior and drug problems, exacerbated by paparazzi harassment after her divorce from Kevin Federline and the release of the album “Blackout.”
