Why is Space Always Dark? BRIN Explains the Science Behind It and Offers Space Weather Information Services

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) revealed that the reason space is always dark is because there is no atmosphere to emit sunlight.

“Therefore, the sun, moon and stars can appear side by side,” said Thomas Djamaluddin, Researcher in Astronomy and Astrophysics at BRIN. Between on Sunday (17/3/2024).

Space is an empty place that has no atmosphere to scatter the light of stars or the sun.

Sunlight travels in straight lines without scattering, so space looks dark because there is nothing to scatter or re-emit sunlight to the eye.

The absence of an atmosphere is what makes humans not see part of the sun’s light and the sky appears black.

BRIN revealed that the sun is one of the stars closest to earth. The activity and influence of the sun is very large on human life.

BRIN provides information services for people who want to know space weather conditions through the Space Weather Information and Forecast Services (SWIFtS) page on the page swifts.brin.go.id.

On this page, the public can find information about solar activity that occurred in the last 24 hours. Apart from that, global and regional geomagnetic and ionospheric conditions in Indonesia.

The data presented in SWIFtS is a summary of the results of observations spread across various regions in Indonesia and the world, as well as observations from outer space.

BRIN also provides opportunities for students to research various phenomena that occur on the sun and other celestial bodies.

Apart from field work practice, BRIN also offers a scheme for the younger generation to become involved as assistant researchers through the Talent Management program. This scheme can be used as an opportunity for the younger generation to use it, so they can be directly involved in conducting research on the sun. (ant/azw/saf/ham)
