WHO alarm: ‘The medical departments in half of Italy are saturated’ – Chronicle

The beds in the medical wards are filled with Covid patients and the hospitals are already almost collapsing. While the pandemic emergency begins to postpone admissions for other pathologies and reduce outpatient services. The alarm was raised by Ranieri Guerra, deputy director of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Walter Ricciardi, advisor to the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza. But the confirmation comes from the data of admissions in the wards in the pulmonology, general medicine and infectious diseases departments: those occupied by Covid patients have exceeded the critical quota of 40% in 10 regions, 3 more than yesterday, reaching a national quota 46%. Even if the situation has some differences compared to the wave in March.

BEDS ARE MISSING, IN PIEDMONT BRANDINE IN THE CHURCH OF THE HOSPITAL

“The alarming figure – affirms Ranieri Guerra – is that of ordinary hospitalizations, which is saturating the internal medicine departments of half of Italy. This is a fact on which it is absolutely fundamental to reflect, because it represents the suffering of the territory and the fact that the first line is crossed “. Ricciardi, professor of hygiene at the Catholic University of Rome, echoes him. “The situation of the hospitals is dramatic more or less throughout Italy, in some cases it is even tragic. We are no longer able to hospitalize patients, those who arrive at the hospital are once again the serious or very serious ones and many have to stay at home” . And “with the capacity of beds that we have, we are able to absorb only Covid patients while all the others with other diseases are unable to cure them or treat them badly, so the system collapses”.

Data from the Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas), updated to November 6, speak for themselves. There are 10 regions with saturated departments compared to the threshold limit of 40%: Emilia Romagna (45%), Lazio (44%), Liguria (70%), Lombardy (69%) Marche (47%), Piedmont (93 %), Bolzano (98%), Trento (44%), Umbria (49%), Valle d’Aosta (89%). While for intensive care the threshold value of 30% is exceeded by 10 regions (Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Bolzano, Trento, Tuscany, Umbria, Valle d’Aosta).
