Which Blood Types Are More Susceptible to COVID-19? Here is the list

Jakarta

Scientists in the world research the effect of blood type on the risk level of Corona virus infection. Some studies suggest that blood type O has the lowest risk of infection COVID-19 compared with blood group A who are more susceptible to Corona virus.

Summarized by detikcom, the following are various studies on the relationship between blood type and the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Blood type A

A study in China conducted on 2,173 Corona patients in Wuhan and Shenzen, reported that blood type A is more susceptible to COVID-19, compared to other blood types. In a study published on MedRxiv.org on March 11, it was reported that 206 patients died in Wuhan due to COVID-19, 85 of whom had blood type A.

“People of blood group A may need to strengthen personal protection to reduce the chance of becoming infected,” wrote the researchers led by Wang Xinghuan, quoted from the South China Morning Post.

They added, Corona patients with blood type A need to receive tighter and more intensive care.

Blood type AB

In the same study, researchers compared 2,173 COVID-19 patients with the population in the region. The results of the comparison were found, the group infected with COVID-19, blood type A 38 percent, 26 percent type B, 10 percent type AB, and 25 percent type O. Observations in Shenzhen also got similar results.

In addition, blood type AB is generally at risk for cognitive impairment and stroke.

Blood type O

Quoted from Reuters, a study involving 225,556 people through the Corona test in Canada found that both O and Rh-negative blood types had a slightly lower risk of COVID-19.

People with blood type O are 12 percent less likely to get infected with COVID-19 and have a 13 percent lower chance of dying from COVID-19. Study author Dr. Joel Ray of St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto said people with blood type O may have developed antibodies that can recognize certain aspects of COVID-19.

“Our next study will specifically look at such antibodies, and whether they explain a protective effect,” said Dr. Ray.
