North Carolina, Raleigh.- Two immigrants of Colombian origin created a device that could save the lives of many. Paula Ramos and Julián Cardona arrived in North Carolina more than a year ago and both used their skills to help the community in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

The crisis facing the health sector due to the lack of artificial respirators due to the coronavirus, made this couple of husbands take their knowledge to another level and use basic elements to create a homemade device.

“It’s very simple. There is a motor that winds a seat beltThis action causes the bag to compress. The rotation of the motor can control how much the bag compresses and the speed, ”explained mechanical engineer Julián Cardona.

While Julián arrived in North Carolina after the company he works for transferred him to the NC State University Research Center, Paula went on to do her PhD studies.

This Colombian couple, who are also parents of a child under 2 and a half years old, are seeking to have their idea help health workers affected by the lack of medical supplies during the Covid-19 crisis.

“The equipment has not been tested, no clinical trials. We know that from our engineering position it works. We hope that later on it will be an option for ambulances, paramedics or field hospitals, ”added electronic engineer Paula Ramos.

Although this artificial respirator does not replace professional devices, it could help in times of crisis if it receives the respective approval. Both Hispanics want the project to be sponsored to create the final product.
