What is the best financial life for marketing managers?

A look at the StepStone cost report shows that large cities are particularly attractive with attractive salaries – but at the end of the month not much is left. Anyone thinking of moving should consider the cost of living in the region.

How much money is left in your wallet at the end of the month? We recently gave you the answer to this question in our report on the StepStone cost report. But current data from the career platform now even allows us to take a detailed look at the marketing industry. So where is the best place to work for marketing managers?

How much is left at the end of the month?

The following values refer to Invoices from the StepStone cost of living calculator. The average wages in the region are used to determine where it is most cost-effective to live. For this, the cost of living (rent, transport, food and leisure activities) is deducted from the average salary and evaluated. 395 urban and rural districts were analyzed for this. First of all, the average salary of marketing managers: According to StepStone’s calculation, this amounts to 53,748 euros gross per year. It should be noted here that particularly high or low salaries shift the average value accordingly. After the flat-rate deduction of 40 percent tax, the net salary is 32,249 euros. After deducting the cost of living from the net salary, 9,675 euros are freely available per year, i.e. around 800 euros per month. This puts the marketing managers just below the average for all industries (10,581 euros per year).

Cost-efficient life for marketing managers in NRW

Even so, this average does not sound bad at all, but the regional differences must be taken into account: The highest average salaries can be found in Munich (58,000 euros), Stuttgart (57,600 euros) and Düsseldorf (56,800 euros), the lowest in Leipzig (43,200 euros) ), Dresden (44,400 euros) and Berlin (51,500 euros). However, if you include the cost of living here, the ranking is completely different. Marketing managers have the most money at the end of the month in North Rhine-Westphalia. Duisburg leads the ranking with 1,164 euros per month. It is closely followed by Essen (1,103 euros) and Dortmund (1,005 euros). It should be noted here that Essen also leads the overall ranking of all industries. This is primarily due to the comparatively low rents and affordable leisure options. The following graphic shows the complete ranking:

What is striking when looking at the ranking is that in Munich and Frankfurt, despite the relatively high gross salaries, there is at least the least amount of money left at the end of the month, only 45 euros and 130 euros respectively. The main reason for this is the high rents in both metropolitan areas, with Munich generally having above-average cost of living. The same can be observed in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne. Our capital Berlin, on the other hand, not only ranks third from last in terms of average salary, but also how much remains in the end. Marketing managers have EUR 316 at their disposal here per month.

When is the move worthwhile for marketing managers?

Of course, there is no general answer to this question. The values from StepStone’s cost calculator are only guidelines that can be influenced by external circumstances. Nevertheless, the ranking helps to make you aware that a higher salary does not necessarily mean financial peace of mind. The big cities in particular are tempting, but the high cost of living there quickly brings most workers back down to earth.

So if you are looking for a new job and are ready to move, you should keep an eye on the salary, rent index and the like. If the city flair is not important to you, you can try to find living space in the more rural area despite having a job in a big city. If you are willing to commute, you can save money – even if you lose time on the journey. In the end, it always comes down to personal priorities.
