What can the new smartphone do?

Sony has launched the new smartphone models for this year. Its expensive top-of-the-range device offers state-of-the-art equipment – with one surprising exception.

The Japanese technology giant has its at a replacement event Smartphone-Novelties for 2020 presented. Actually, that should have happened at the “Mobile Word Congress”, but it was canceled because of the corona virus Service.

Has now Sony in addition to a new top device, the Sony Xperia 1 II (from June, 1199 euros) also presented a smartphone for the middle class: the Xperia 10 II (from June, 369 euros).

Top device is well equipped but also very expensive

According to the current status, the new top device is appropriately equipped for an upper-class smartphone: the currently fastest processor for Android devices, the Snapdragon 865 with the associated one 5GModem, a 4k OLED display (3840 by 1644 pixels), a fairly large one battery pack with 4000 mAh capacity, 256 GB memory, 8 GB RAM and a modern triple camera complete the package. Another special feature is that Sony still has a technically outdated connection in the device: an analog headphone connection.

Most manufacturers meanwhile do without it due to space constraints. Using a USB-C adapter, wired headphones can still be used here, high-quality analog-digital converters even offer better quality than the usually integrated converter chips, which are connected upstream of an analog headphone connection. Perhaps Sony wants to meet its own headphone customers with the analog socket.

The design made of glass and aluminum is also appealing. The device – like its name – looks a little unimaginative, but on paper it looks like a very round flagship smartphone. However, it remains open whether buyers are willing to pay the high price of the device.

Solid mid-range device

The new mid-range device Xperia 10 II could be more interesting for many users at a price of around 370 euros – especially since this time Sony also installed a triple camera: wide angle (12MP), super wide angle (8MP) and telephoto lens (8 MP). The rest of the equipment corresponds to the upper middle class standard: FullHD + OLED display, Snapdragon 665, 128 GB memory and 4 GB working memory. The analog headphone jack is also built into this device. Like the expensive model, the Xperia 10 II is waterproof.

The design is a bit rounder than the top device – the predecessor Xperia 10 was actually very comfortable to hold. The second variant of the Xperia 10 could also score here. Buyers will not receive 5G – however, this will not be absolutely necessary in the coming years.
