“Thunder Force” started on April 9th
Melissa McCarthy (50, “Bridal Alert”) and Octavia Spencer (50, “The Help”) have been friends for more than 20 years. However, they have never stood together in leading roles in front of the film camera. Until now. In the Netflix comedy “Thunder Force” (starting April 9) by McCarthy’s husband Ben Falcone (47), the two Hollywood stars play two estranged childhood friends who have to pull themselves together in a world full of villains for law and To ensure order. Ms. McCarthy, you are currently filming in Australia and were allegedly bitten by a giant crab spider …
Melissa McCarthy: It wasn’t a giant crab spider. You can’t confuse them because they can get very big. I don’t know what got me. That actually happened a few months ago.
A video of the incident appeared on your Instagram account just over three weeks ago.
McCarthy: Yeah, a prankster cut it up for me. I had before [in einem Interview, Anm. d. Red.] said I love Australia and the critters there. Someone would later say, “Oh, really?” When I was bitten by something and had a severe allergic reaction. For four days I had rashes all over the place.
Are you “Spider-Woman” now?
McCarthy: (laughs) Yeah, maybe I really have superpowers now and I don’t know anything about them. Maybe I can climb a wall.
In “Thunder Force” you and Octavia Spencer play superheroes. You have known each other for more than 20 years. Was it a lot of fun standing in front of the camera together?
McCarthy: Yes, Octavia is one of the best living actresses on the planet. When shooting I had everything at once: I was in front of the camera with a dear friend and at the same time with an incredibly talented actress.
Ms. Spencer, what is Melissa McCarthy’s superpower?
Octavia Spencer: Melissa is an incredible actress. There are few people who are convincing in both comedies and dramas and she does. Other than that, she’s a great mom, a great friend, a great producer, and a great designer. She is a real “Wonder Woman”! Unfortunately that name is already taken, so we might just call it “The Hammer”.
Ms. McCarthy, what is Octavia Spencer’s superpower?
McCarthy: I always describe Octavia as a unicorn. She is magical in terms of her kindness and intelligence. Ben and I are often at a loss and then Octavia comes along and explains something in the perfect way. I always talk a lot, but Octavia gets to the point. Your superpowers are talent, kindness, integrity … and that’s what we need so badly in the world right now. She uses them in her films and in her private life. We need these powers and have to recognize that these character traits are just as useful to attract attention as glitter and glamor. More people need to see the unicorn.
At the beginning of the film, you became estranged as friends after an argument. Have you ever had an argument in real life – possibly even after the 2012 Academy Awards when you were nominated in the same category?
McCarthy: No, that would make us monsters! But our professional appointments have already ensured that for several years we have never been in the same city at the same time, sometimes not even in the same country. That went on for about three years. The fact that we could now live close together and be in front of the camera together feels like a dream.
Spencer: It was definitely a dream!
