United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) unravels the fate of the rides Voyager 2 who has been traveling in space for 46 years. Can it still operate?
This was revealed by NASA via account X (which was formerly Twitter). It is stated that Voyager 2 is still surviving in outer space.
“46 years later, and I’m still here! #OTD in 1977, I blasted off into space, about two weeks before Voyager 1. What an amazing trip! Check out some of my favorite moments so far,” as quoted by @NASAVoyager.
Voyager 2 was launched August 20, 1977 from Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard the Titan-Centaur rocket. On September 5, Voyager 1 was also launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Titan-Centaur rocket.
Voyager 1 and 2 explored all the giant planets in the solar system, namely Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune for 48 months, and saw the ring systems and magnetic fields that these planets have.
Quoted from JPL Voyager, the closest approach to Jupiter occurred on March 5, 1979 for Voyager 1; July 9, 1979 for Voyager 2.
Voyager was the third and fourth human spacecraft to fly across all the planets in our solar system.
The space probes Pioneer 10 and 11 ahead of Voyager in terms of exceeding the Sun’s gravitational pull, but on February 17, 1998, Voyager 1 surpassed Pioneer 10 to become the most distant man-made object in space.
NASA had previously gradually restored communication with the Voyager 2 spacecraft after contact was lost following a misadjustment.
The Voyager 2 long-range mission is currently about 19.9 billion kilometers from Earth. The contact occurred as a result of a series of commands that accidentally moved Voyager’s antenna 2 degrees away from Earth on July 28.
