The scene is shocking by its pure gratuitousness. On Monday, June 22, numerous illegal fireworks were launched in the skies of New York, reports the local branch of CBS. Only one of them didn’t go up in the air. In a video widely relayed on social networks, we see a hooded African-American deliberately throwing a lit firework mortar on the bed of a homeless man, who is sleeping on the sidewalk. The pyrotechnic device explodes and sets the man’s blankets on fire, while the assailant flees, a big smile on his face.

According to CBS, the facts took place in the Harlem district, around 4 a.m. The 66-year-old victim reportedly suffered minor burns. What is also shocking about this sequence is the fact that no passerby seems to want to come to the aid of the poor man, whose blankets are burning.
Illegal fireworks across New Jersey
More broadly, the New York police have documented numerous illegal fireworks, especially in the Harlem and Bronx neighborhoods, since the start of the week. According to the NYPD (New York Police Department), 911 calls to launch illegal pyrotechnic devices have increased tenfold compared to the same period last year. Since Monday, June 22, there have been no less than 13,000 reports. “This worries me a lot”, city councilor Daniel Dromm told CBS.
