He has lived in Wiesenbronn since 2014 and was elected mayor in the local elections in March: Volkhard Warmdt, grew up near Hanover and worked for several years as the manager of a horticultural company near Wolfsburg. Before the elections, many Wiesenbronners approached them as the right man to head the wine-growing village. He himself, who had worked for the party “Die Grnen” in the past few years, could imagine working in the local council but was skeptical about the candidacy for mayor. Ultimately, however, he received so much support that he prevailed against his two competitors in the first ballot.
Lots of audience at the council meetings
Warmdt started his work with a lot of enthusiasm and at the council meetings in the sports hall with a lot of public interest it was evident that factual discussions and cooperation in the council mean a lot to him. Under his leadership, the committee not only meets regularly on the second Tuesday of the month, but also for working meetings in between. “After all, there are a lot of issues to be dealt with and it’s important to look ahead, not backwards,” he explains.
Warmdt’s way to Wiesenbronn was extraordinary: On his 50th birthday in 2012, he went on a bike tour through Uganda and Christiane Brauns, whom he got to know and love and who has lived in Wiesenbronn for twelve years, was part of the group of cyclists. What was initially a weekend acquaintance for two years turned into a steady relationship in 2014.
At the moment, he, the council and the people of Wiesenbronn are particularly interested in three issues that also kept his predecessor Doris Paul busy. On the one hand there is the general store, which is to be brought back to life and for which applications were obtained. Then the planned citizen’s house and the sewage connection to the Kitzinger sewage treatment plant. Here he is cautiously optimistic because there are new talks with the neighboring community of Grolangheim. Maybe there will be a common sewer after all. So far it was the case that Grolangheim rejected a Wiesenbronn sewer on the Grolangheimer Sdrand, but is now ready to talk about a new route further away from the village. “If we can do that, I’ll be really happy,” says Warmdt.
Warmdt was surprised by the number of appointments
Next construction site: the citizens’ house. Warmdt does not want to decide over the heads of the Wiesenbronners and invited to an information event. The mayor himself is “not yet completely convinced of the house, since the follow-up costs must also be included in the considerations”.
In addition, Warmdt has a lot of little things close to his heart, about which he talks to many when he is cycling in the village, “because they also contribute to the good atmosphere in the village”. This also includes projects as formulated in the Integrated Urban Development Concept (ISEK): “How much we can implement also depends on our financial situation,” explains the new mayor clearly. According to him, this is currently good, even if tax losses are to be expected due to Corona and the community has to make advance payments until subsidies are received.
Thanks to the support of the VG employees, he got into office well. He is particularly impressed by the cooperation in the council, “because the work is spread over many heads due to the presentations, which has already proven itself quite well”. He was surprised by the amount of work in the first few weeks. “I didn’t expect to have to keep so many appointments that were a bit of a hindrance to familiarization.”
