“Utopia of the Seas: The Largest Liquid Gas-Powered Liner Set to Reduce Emissions by 20%”

A fourth class ship Oasis has dominated the Chantiers de l’Atlantique for the past few weeks. The hull of the liner Utopia of the seas is well advanced, one year before its delivery to cruise line RCCL scheduled for May 2024.

This 362 m giant will have the distinction of being the largest in its category to operate with liquid gas. On board such a ship, everything runs on electricity, whether it’s propulsion, air conditioning or life on board. The generator that produces this electricity will therefore no longer run on heavy fuel oil but on gas, which will reduce the ship’s CO2 emissions by 20%. According to the Paris Agreements, these emissions must be reduced to zero by 2050.

The 362 m vessel, which is code A35 on the naval site, will carry 7,000 passengers and 2,400 crew members. Unless the schedule changes, the next ship deliveries for the shipyard are MSC Euribia (June 2023), the Celebrity Ascent (November 2023), then the Utopia of the seas.
