US President Joe Biden said on Friday he was “heartbroken” by the death of American Gadi Haggai, who was reportedly killed by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on October 7 during an attack on Israel.
This is stated in statement Biden on the White House website, European Pravda reports.
It was previously believed that Haggai, a 73-year-old Israeli-American, was taken hostage with his wife during the attack. However, on Friday, a group representing the families of the hostages said Haggai had been killed.

“Jill and I are heartbroken by the news that American Gadi Haggai is now believed to have been killed by Hamas on October 7. We continue to pray for the well-being and safe return of his wife Judy,” the US president said in a statement.
Judith Weinstein, Haggai’s wife, remains hostage in Gaza, Israeli publication Haaretz reported.
Biden’s statement did not provide any details about what happened to Haggai.
According to the Israeli side, on October 7, Hamas attacked the border Israeli kibbutzim, resulting in the death of 1,200 people, and 240 people were taken hostage to Gaza.
Israeli officials say 129 people remain captive in Gaza after others were repatriated during the November truce or released during the military offensive.
The Forum for Hostages and Families of Missing Persons said between five and 10 of the hostages were U.S. citizens.
