US and Ukraine Call for Military Aid Amid Russia Conflict: White House Blames Congress for Inaction

Zelensky has previously called on the US to send military aid to Ukraine, saying that a Russian victory in the fighting would have “catastrophic consequences” across Europe. The representatives of the White House also say that aid should be sent to Ukraine and blame the inaction of Congress for the fall of the Ukrainian city of Avdiyivka into the hands of Russia.

“The Ukrainian army was forced to withdraw from Avdiyivka due to insufficient ammunition,” the White House said.

The US Senate approved sending a $60 billion aid package to Ukraine earlier this week after prolonged political wrangling. However, the decision still needs to be approved by the US House of Representatives, where a broad backlash from Republicans is expected.

“Ukrainians have fought bravely and heroically and risked everything. To neglect Ukraine now, when the country lacks weapons, seems to me simply absurd,” the US president told the media after meeting with Zelensky.

“It’s unethical and against everything we believe in as a country,” he added, noting that he would do anything to get Ukraine the ammunition it needs.

“I am glad that I can count on the support of Joe Biden,” the president of Ukraine said on social media.
