It was not only unrest among supporters surrounding AZ’s Conference League match against Legia Warschau in Alkmaar. There was also a scuffle near the team bus of the visiting club from Poland. Two arrests were made.

The police cannot yet say what exactly happened. Polish media report that two Legia players have been arrested. The riot police allegedly entered the players’ bus and arrested the football players for assault.

Images are also circulating on social media showing skirmishes between the riot police and Legia representatives near the players’ bus. One of those representatives was Dariusz Mioduski, the owner and chairman of Legia Warsaw.

According to Polish TVP Sports Mioduski has been hit. He is said to have resisted the arrest of the players. The police say that they cannot say anything about this and expect to have more information during the morning on Friday.

Before the match, it was also uneasy at the AFAS Stadium. Legia supporters stormed the entrance gate and clashed with the riot police, who were unable to prevent some of them from entering the stadium without a ticket.

According to police, “fierce force” was used. According to the police, the hooligans took batons and pepper spray. One riot police officer became unconscious during the violence. The Polish supporters also had heavy fireworks with them.

The police had already taken the necessary measures in advance to prevent disorder. Legia Warsaw fans have had a bad reputation for years. They were also not welcome in the city center, partly because of the celebration of 450 years of Alkmaars Relief.

The match between AZ and Legia was won 1-0 by the home team. Vangelis Pavlidis scored the only goal for the Alkmaarders just after halftime. Despite a red card from Mayckel Lahdo, AZ held out for the remainder of the match.
