US President Donald Trump has declared the California wildfires a major disaster, unlocking emergency federal aid.
Trump’s statement will release federal assistance for the state, with Gov. Gavin Newsom saying it will also help residents of counties affected by the fires by providing crisis counseling, housing and other social services.
The state has previously requested help from Australia and Canada to contain the fires, which have displaced more than 100,000 people and killed six others, while burning hundreds of homes.
More than 14,000 firefighters are battling 585 fires that have burned nearly 400,000 hectares as high winds threaten to push the flames towards the most populous areas of the state.
Most of the destruction was caused by three large fire complexes in rural mountainous and forested areas.
