Ukrainian Armed Forces took control of a village in the “gray zone” of Donetsk region

The publication drew attention to the fact that Russian propagandists and media controlled by militants today started reporting about the capture of Staromaryevka by the Ukrainian military.

Sources of “Babel” in the Ministry of Defense confirmed this. According to them, the Ukrainian military entered the village on October 25 and established a foothold there.

Staromaryevka is in the “zero” or “gray zone” reported on the UNICEF Facebook page in August 2020. 150 people live there, seven of them are children.

Staromaryevka is located near the village of Granitnoye, they are separated by the Kalmius river. Before the war, there was a road bridge between them, but it was blown up in 2014, now the village is connected by a pedestrian bridge, Babel writes. Residents of Staromaryevka went to Granitnoe to the store and the hospital, children attended school in the territory controlled by Ukraine, the village is predominantly Ukrainian-speaking.

Context:

Immediately after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia launched an armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. The fighting is between the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the one hand and the Russian army and Russian-backed militants who control parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions on the other. Officially, the Russian Federation does not recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.
