Two fires leave one dead and several injured in the Bronx, one caused by an ion battery

NEW YORK — One man was killed and nearly a dozen injured were the result of two different fires that occurred Sunday night in the Bronx.

The first fire occurred Sunday around 7:00 pm on the 10th floor of a 14-story NYCHA building located on the 1440 Bronx River Avenue in the Soundview area. 20 units with 78 firefighters arrived at this fire. The flames left 9 people injured, 4 of them were hospitalized. Additionally, a 39-year-old man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but did not survive his injuries.

At the scene of this deadly fire, firefighters found an electric bicycle near a door and a lithium-ion battery. The Fire Department confirmed that the cause of this incident was the lithium-ion battery.

Shortly after, at around 8:46 p.m., another fire broke out on the third floor of a building located at 1785 Prospect Ave in Crotona Park East, authorities said. Images from Citizen App show flames coming out of the window.

In total, 12 units responded with 60 firefighters who managed to put the fire under control almost an hour later. In this fire one person was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The cause of this fire has not been released, however, both fires remain under investigation.
