Tragedy on Lake Aichwaldsee in the municipality of Finkenstein (Villach district). A 68-year-old cleaned the ice of the ice rink and broke in with his vehicle.
Vehicle sank into the water with a man
At this point the ice master was still in the vehicle. The intrusion was observed by chance by the head of operations at the Austrian Water Rescue Service Faak am See. He ran to the scene of the accident and immediately wanted to provide first aid. At this point, however, the vehicle had already sunk.
Only divers were able to free ice masters
The 68-year-old man had not made it out of the vehicle and was subsequently recovered by divers from the Austrian water rescue service Faak am See and Sattendorf. Despite immediate attempts at resuscitation by an emergency doctor, he still died at the scene of the accident.
Vehicle sank six meters
“The fire brigade cannot judge how this can happen. The police are on site and are investigating the facts, that is, the investigations are ongoing,” fire brigade operations manager Jürgen Nessmann from Feuer Latschach told “5min.at”. The vehicle was recovered by crane, it was sunk six meters deep in the lake.
