Two escaped Palestinian militants arrested in Israel

Israeli police have arrested two of the Palestinian militants who escaped from a prison early this week. They were arrested tonight near the northern Israeli city of Nazareth, where many Palestinians live.

The two escaped in the night from Sunday to Monday along with four others from Gilboa Prison, near the West Bank border. They had dug a tunnel under a sink in their cell.

The escape, from one of the country’s highest-security prisons, deeply embarrassed Israeli authorities. Four of the six were serving life sentences for attacks on Israelis. The most famous of the six, Zakaria Zubeidi, is a former commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian Fatah movement.

No resistance

Police have not disclosed which two fugitives have been arrested. According to the newspaper Haaretz it’s not about Zubeidi, but about two of the life sentences. The other four are still missing.

The two would have been arrested after people had alerted the police to two figures who behaved suspiciously. They do not resist their arrest, writes Haaretz.
