“Twitter Faces Backlash Over Blue Checkmark Verification System: Elon Musk Calls it Corrupt”

SAN FRANCISCO Previously, the white ticks on a blue background were given free by Twitter to celebrities and public figures after an identity check. Tech billionaire Musk called the system “corrupt” after buying Twitter. He announced that only Blue subscribers will have the same-looking icon in their accounts. There is no real verification, only a telephone number is confirmed.

Some users have questioned whether Twitter could face legal trouble by returning a tick if the explanation text incorrectly states that a celebrity subscribed to a paid subscription. On Sunday, the accounts of deceased stars such as actor Chadwick Boseman and basketball player Kobe Bryant also wore the symbol.

A movement had previously formed on Twitter, led by musician Max Collins from the rock band Eve 6, calling for Blue subscribers to be blocked. Among the accounts with the new blue icons are many Musk fans who share his right-wing political views. “Verification meant that a person is an actor or journalist or something like that,” Collins wrote in a tweet. “Now it means that behind this is a white nationalist with 30 followers, or someone who sells cryptocurrencies.” The Blue subscription costs 9.52 euros per month in Germany.

Meanwhile, Oswalt found a way to get rid of the tick: He briefly changed his profile name. According to Twitter rules, an account can only have a tick if it hasn’t “recently” changed its photo, profile name, or account name.
