Tragedy at sea. A promising 17-year-old yachtswoman drowned in Tunisia, competing at the Tokyo Olympics

Eja Guezguez, a 17-year-old yachting Olympian, drowned at home in Tunisia while training at sea.

A strong wind overturned the ship she was in with the twin, Sarra. According to a report by the International Olympic Committee, she survived Sunday’s tragedy.

The Guezguez sisters competed in last year’s Tokyo Games in the 49er FX class. They took 21st place and were looking forward to improving their position in two years at the Paris Olympics.

“I was shocked by the news of her death. She was an inspiring talent and role model for athletes of her generation,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.
