Thuringian Corona hotspot: Searching for clues in the Greiz district

“If you test a lot, you will find a lot!” With these words, the Greiz district administrator Martina Schweinsburg (CDU) justified why the incidence figures in her district are so immensely high. For two weeks now, children and young people in the Greiz district have been taking the test: “Warning, your nose tingles for a moment!”

It was a “cold plus”

For the parents it was “the usual cold” that children always have. But it often turned out to be a corona infection. Because: Children usually do not show any typical corona symptoms – and yet they carry the virus within them and pass it on in the family. Only when the virus hits the parents with heavier guns is the infection recognized – too late.

It was probably the same in the small town of Berga. The around 3,200 inhabitants are spread over 13 districts. You can actually avoid yourself or protect yourself adequately, says Mayor Heinz-Peter Beyer. Many older people also wear an FFP2 mask on the street. Even in the supermarket. But she is torn from her face three paces behind the shop door. Then you meet friends and chat. Without mask. So my observation on Wednesday morning. But I could probably do it anywhere in Germany. So that can hardly be the only cause of the high incidence value in the district of Greiz. As of Tuesday afternoon – according to the RKI – at 548.3.

Mayor: High numbers due to children

“We have been testing the ten employees in the town hall since February 2nd. According to the order from the Ministry of Health, we asked our doctor unbureaucratically to test the kindergarten teachers at Berga Both kindergartens are closed; emergency care may be offered again from Thursday in Wolfersdorf, “hopes Heinz-Peter Beyer. “The high numbers definitely come from the children. If you were to do the same test key in other federal states, the numbers would be so high everywhere.” The mayor thinks the district’s strategy is good: “This way, the chain of infection can finally be broken.” According to the district office, 106 people are actively suffering from Corona in Berga.

“The children finally have to go back to school!”

About 20 kilometers further. There is a long line of people of all ages in the market square in Auma. Every minute they advance into the test bus of the DRK. “Come on, here on our comfortable test sofa!” Former nurse Angelika Ortlepp puts a smile on everyone’s face before testing. She works on a voluntary basis. “I have a great team here,” says boss Julia Winter enthusiastically. Almost 50 people are tested here in an hour. “So far all negative! With the tests we are further containing the spread of the virus. Sure – if you test a lot, you will find a lot. In this respect, I think the district’s strategy is just right,” says Julia Winter.

Sandra Freund also sees it that way. She had her son tested so that he can go back to emergency care the next day. Their eleven-year-old daughter has been home since mid-December. “The children finally have to go back to school! The wave of infection can only be interrupted if we all test them. Unfortunately, there is no other way.”

The masks dangle from the chin

It is market day in Zeulenroda – with four stalls. Actually, according to the city’s order, everyone should wear a mask. They do that too: on the neck. A similar picture in the drugstore next door. Almost every customer has his nose uncovered; even with younger people. When asked about it, an elegant young woman says: “It’s all silly.” And turns back to cosmetics with her little daughter.

If the barbecue weather comes now, it could be critical

Heike Bergmann, first alderman in Zeulenroda-Triebes

“Anyone who has both feet on the ground knows that nothing works without grandparents. And if we now know that children are carriers of the virus, we can react better and protect people from infection,” says Heike Bergmann, first Alderman in Zeulenroda-Triebes. According to the Greiz district office – as of Tuesday afternoon – 298 people are actively ill. Here, too, the numbers come mainly from children’s facilities and schools. “We just received a letter from the Ministry of Education that we will get new rapid tests for the students in the next few days; also for younger ones. The numbers will continue to rise. But we now know better how we can prevent further transmission,” says Bergmann. Ultimately, however, everyone is responsible for themselves. “If the barbecue weather comes now, it could be critical with the distance.”
