German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the Western coalition in Afghanistan was defeated and now it is necessary to focus on rescue. She stated this during a speech at a meeting of the leadership of the Christian Democratic Union on Monday, August 16, reports Wild.
“We are going through bitter times, now we must focus on salvation!” – said the Chancellor of Germany, commenting on the situation in Afghanistan.
At the same time, Merkel acknowledged that now the safety of evacuating people from Kabul airport depends only on the American military.
The Chancellor noted that the withdrawal of US troops led to a “domino effect” that destroyed the order formed over 20 years.
“We wanted to build a country with a democratic structure, we failed. There was no connection between the Afghan armed forces and the people, it did not work the way we thought,” Merkel said.
The German Chancellor noted that now it is worth paying attention to something else: “What can be achieved with such interventions? How can we introduce political order in other countries?”
“The decision to withdraw the troops caused a new dynamic. For many who believed in democracy and freedom, especially women, this is a sad result,” she said.
Merkel also stressed that now it is necessary to protect as many people as possible.
It was previously reported that EU countries evacuate diplomats from Kabul. Italy, France, Germany, Finland, Sweden have decided to close their embassies in Afghanistan.
