The president of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, presented his interpretation of “sexual harassment” on Friday and said that women only denounce him when the man is “ugly”, because when he is a “well-presented person” they do not think that it is an abuse.
“Men are permanently subject to the danger of being accused of harassment,” the president said during a public event in Guayaquil with investors and financiers to whom he exposed his policy of economic expansion.
And he added that, although “it is well that they do it (that they denounce)”, he said to see that “sometimes, in the harassment, they are angry with those ugly people”.
“That is to say that the harassment is when it comes from an ugly person. But if the person is well presented according to the canons, they usually do not necessarily think that it is a harassment,” said the president.
And referring to himself, he joked that “in the case of his age,” 66, “it would no longer be harassment but sexual decline.”
The video with his statements, in addition to viralizing on networks, generated all kinds of reactions, especially those that were increasing the president for his opinion.
Moreno, to placate the avalanche of criticism, posted an apology on his Twitter account and highlighted his rejection of all forms of violence against women.
“In my commentary on harassment, I did not intend to minimize such a serious matter as violence or abuse. I apologize if it was understood that way. I reject violence against women in all its forms!” The president wrote.
A short video with the controversial declarations of the president, of just 36 seconds, has been disseminated through social networks shortly after the Secretary of Communication issued a press release about his participation in the investment meeting, which was attended by hundreds of people, among them numerous women.
The president spoke at the “Ecuador: Reliable investment destination” forum, in the Espiritu Santo University, in Samborondón, near Guayaquil.
In addition to economic matters, in his address Moreno spoke of multiple issues until he came to harassment and noted that in his country it is a “pandemic.”
