The winners of LEGO Masters are known: ‘It was so exciting’

All votes for the LEGO Masters final have been counted. Roy (33) from Bergen op Zoom and his Belgian friend Thomas (29) have emerged as winners of the popular RTL4 program. They are overjoyed: “We couldn’t believe it!”

The final of the popular television program was broadcast on Saturday evening. Several Lego sets competed against each other and had to build a masterful creation within 28 hours. They did not have guidelines for this: their own imagination was leading in this free assignment.

Roy and Thomas have spent that. Thomas has been building with Lego all his life and goes for the technical highlights, while Roy lets his creativity run free. How could it be otherwise: they live together in a self-built house just across the border.

In the finale, they stood out with a self-invented sleeping giant waking up from his sleep. Also special was the combination with the ski slope, which is a common thread in the private life of the couple. Both love skiing.

“It was so exciting,” says Roy. “Everyone is so good at building with Lego and we didn’t really expect to make it to the final. Somewhere in the middle bracket would be nice, we thought. ”

The lovebirds now know from their own experience how different things can turn out. Not only did they manage to get the most children’s voices on their side. The brickmasters – professional Lego builders – were also very enthusiastic.

“We hardly realized we had won,” Thomas continues. “You live in the moment and are completely overwhelmed by all the confetti, the cameras, the lights and the tension that is built up.”

While the final was broadcast on Saturday evening, the recordings were already shot six months ago. So they had to sit on their hands quite a bit. But now – after half a year of patience – the big word is out: they are the winners of LEGO Masters 2021.

Lego has always played a hobby role in Thomas’s life and has drawn Roy along in his passion. Certainly after years ago they accidentally ended up together at a Lego park in Germany. Since then, the building blocks have helped to form the glue in their relationship. Especially now, in corona time, they can completely lose their egg in it. “It is very relaxing,” says Roy. But whether this Lego adventure changes their hobby? “No”, he claims, “it is and will remain a hobby. A very nice one, though. ”

Brabanters turn out to be particularly good at making special Lego buildings. The previous season was won by Jan in Lola from Boxtel.
