The Superior Health Council (CSS), in collaboration with several Belgian partners competent in the field of vaccination, looked into the target groups who could have priority access to the Covid-19 vaccine and the number of doses needed, he said Thursday in a statement. Information that comes as vaccines entered clinical development on July 9.

The Superior Health Council recommends giving priority for vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 to workers in the health care sector, to people aged over 65 and to patients aged 45 to 65 with co-morbidities (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal and hepatic diseases, hematological malignancies and cancers) who are at risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19.
But this recommendation could be modified according to new data and information on the immunogenicity of the type or vaccines that will be available, specifies the CSS. “For example, we will follow more closely the data concerning pregnant women, other immunocompromised patients as well as the impact of socio-economic and ethnic origin,” he adds.
After consultation with the Sciensano Institute of Public Health and the Federal Center of Expertise in Health Care KCE, the CSS estimated that around 4 million people are among the risk groups and priority groups for vaccination against Covid -19 in Belgium.
He recalls that the vaccination obligation is not his responsibility and assumes that at least 20 to 30% of people belonging to priority groups and at risk will refuse this new vaccination. “It is more important than ever to provide up-to-date, independent and transparent scientific information, so that healthcare professionals and patients can make an informed choice,” said the Superior Health Council.
