A really sad event happened at the Highland Games (Scottish Games), which primarily test the strength of athletes. An unfortunate death occurred during this event in the Netherlands. One of the strongmen threw the hammer over the fence and hit a 65-year-old passerby. He eventually succumbed to his injuries.
The Highland Games are a celebration of Scottish culture where participants dress in kilts and compete in strength events to the sound of bagpipes. One such is the hammer throw, which, however, differs from the more well-known discipline at athletic events.
A piece of sports equipment weighing 22 kilograms went outside the marked area at the games in the Netherlands and hit a 65-year-old man who was not a spectator of the Highland Games. The hammer hit him in the head while he was admiring the nearby Geldrop Castle.
“We saw the round implement fly over the hedge, after which we heard only a very loud scream of a woman,” said one of the witnesses. The emergency services soon arrived, but they were unable to save the life of the unknown man. The sports event was subsequently cancelled.
All competitors are distraught by the death and are being given professional help. “I haven’t spoken to him myself, but he is mentally ill, this should never have happened to him,” said event organizer Adri Geerts towards the man who threw the hammer.
