The Schengen visa throws Europe into turmoil, what’s going on?

Jakarta

Indonesians who want to take a vacation in Europe definitely need a Schengen visa. This visa makes it easy to travel to Europe.

Schengen it is a passport-free zone which so far covers 26 European countries. Most of the members of the zone are European Union countries and countries such as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

But the Schengen visa is being agitated by European countries. Austria refused to allow Romania and Bulgaria into the European passport travel zone.

Before Romania and Bulgaria, there was also Croatia which declared its intention to enter the zone. But finally, Croatia managed to become a Schengen member as of January 1st.

The Romanian and Bulgarian offers themselves were countered by Austria’s refusal. Vienna, which has reported the arrival of more than 100,000 illegal migrants this year, says it has no faith in Romanian and Bulgarian border controls.

The country says the removal of checks on people arriving from the two countries will open up the Schengen zone to more illegal immigration.

“I will vote today against the enlargement of Schengen to Romania and Bulgaria. I think it is wrong to enlarge a system that doesn’t work in many places,” said Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner quoted by Russia Today on Friday (9/12/ 2022).

Vienna’s objections were criticized by other member states because the European Commission, charged with assessing potential Schengen candidates, considered that the two Balkan countries had met all the necessary conditions to enter the passport-free zone since at least 2011.

Ahead of the vote, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is still asking Austria to reconsider its stance on Romania and Bulgaria. Baerbock considered them to be on a par with Croatia for being part of the Schengen zone.

Furthermore, the two Balkan countries became full members of the European Union in 2007. This was six years before Croatia, which joined in 2013.
