Streaming platforms bet every year on big premieres. Netflix He knows that very well, or at least he showed it with tanks like Bird Box, Red Notice o Don’t Look Up. The intention to continue beating his own record continues: the July 22 will premiere The Gray Manthe film with the highest budget in its entire history that will star Ryan Reynolds y Chris Evans.
It is a pure action story that promises to become a franchise with at least one sequel. What is it about? The Gray Man, as translated for Spanish America, features Court Gentry, a CIA agent also known as the Sierra Six. After escaping from prison and being recruited by Donald Fitzroy -his handler played by Billy Bob Thornton- he is chased around the world by his ex-partner Lloyd Hansen.
Previously, Court Gentry had been a “agency’s highly rated death merchant”, so Lloyd will do everything possible to eliminate it. While Gosling takes on the role of Sierra Six, Evans this time takes on the role of Hansen. Few times the actor – who recently shone in Lightyear– held the role of villain. However, the directors behind the project revealed that they prepared for almost 10 years this paper.
The filmmakers behind the project are the brothers Russothe same film directors of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America and the Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War y Avengers: Endgame. Bearing in mind that Evans held for years the role of Captain America, they know very well the potential of the interpreter. In dialogue with Comic Book, Joe explained: “We read The Gray Man years ago while we were making Winter Soldier and we actually did the first adaptation between takes while directing it as a potential movie to direct after we were done with it”.
But Kevin Feige’s company had other plans: “Then they asked us to do Civil War and then Avengers, so we left this in the drawer for a few years”. Anthony Russo insisted: “Working with Chris for so many years through those four movies on that specific Captain America character was very exciting. But of course we begin to develop a feeling that Chris’s ability as an actor goes far beyond of all the wonderful things he brought to that character.”.
Finally, the director revealed: “We wanted to do something with him that would take him as far away from that character as possible. I don’t know if he could get further away from Captain America than from the character he plays in The Gray Man.” In this way, the Russo brothers assure that it is a film that has very little of Marvel and Captain America, beyond the remarkable action that it presented in its first trailers.
