International Master (IM) Jorge Girón and FIDE Master (WFM) Angie García lead the Open Superior 2024 chess – – 2024-05-01 16:18:36

With two rounds remaining in the 2024 Senior Category Open Championship, organized by the Salvadoran Chess Federation (FSA), International Master (IM) Jorge Girón and FIDE Master (WFM) Angie García lead their respective categories.

In men’s competition, Girón defeated FIDE Master (MF) Daniel Arias, a victory with which he climbed to first position with five points. For his part, Santiago Guevara defeated IM Lemnys Arias and placed second in the standings with 4.5 points.

In this contest, Guevara has faced strong rivals such as Master Candidate (CM) Manuel Meléndez, as well as FM Ricardo Chávez and Arias himself, however, Santiago has known how to take advantage of his opportunities against his opponents. “Master Arias, at some point forgot to make a move and let me take all the space and three passed pawns from him,” added Guevara.

After the day closed, the podium of the fifth round was completed by MF Ricardo Chávez, by drawing with Santiago Guevara and accumulating 4.5 points and followed by four chess players who have four points.

On the other hand, in the women’s category, the WFM Angie García placed in first position and seeks to repeat her crowning in this competition like the previous year. Despite being at the top of the table in this round, García valued the difficulty of this tournament, “There have been quite instructive games with very strong players. It is Olympic year and we all want to achieve a place in the national team.”

The Master Candidates (WCM) Marielos Vásquez and Alejandra Zavala completed the podium of the day, reaching four points each.

To close the championship, round six will take place on Saturday, May 4 and the last on Sunday, May 5.
