The Rise of Rimac: Transforming Croatia’s Car Industry with Immaculate Electric Cars

If it was once said that electric cars were simpler to build than combustion cars, that may have been true for some manufacturers who did little more than conversions from internal combustion cars, buying an engine and some batteries from suppliers. But when peak efficiency and performance are desired, the engineering of an electric car is perhaps even more sophisticated and complex than that of a combustion car, largely because there is not as much prior experience, and engineers must make their own discoveries and their own technological leaps.

And Rimac engineers know better than anyone what this own discovery means. And that’s because absolutely all the essential components of these electric cars were developed internally, by Rimac engineers, not bought from suppliers. Batteries down to the cells, electric motors down to the alloy, cooling, magnets and wires, suspension, structure, every cog in this car was designed in-house because no one in the world had created such high and perfect performance in the world of electric cars.

And, perhaps the most impressive thing is to realize that this factory, and this hand of superb engineers was born in a country with zero experience in the car industry, and with no other car factory on its territory! Yes, Croatia does not have another car manufacturer, and Rimac was the first.

And it is equally impressive to think that this factory and the team of engineers are located today where Yugoslavia was in the 80s, a country that went through communism and had a similar fate at that time to many countries in Europe from East.

And look, after all that, today in this place there is perhaps the most immaculate and technological factory of electric cars in the world, a factory where a huge number of operations and processes are done on site, from the carbon fiber baking of the car structure to the production of components and their assembly. What the people from Rimac did is so incredible and progressive from Porsche that the Germans, after investing massively in them, gave them the ownership and management of the Bugatti company. And today, the successor to the Bugatti Chiron is still being designed here, at Rimac, in today’s Croatia and former Yugoslavia.

And that tells us a lot. Including that sometimes some brilliant engineers can transform a country completely, bringing industries where they did not exist and making the best performance in the world where no one would have believed in them. And it also tells us that this new era of electric cars has shaken the industry enough for the dinosaurs to falter and for spaces to emerge through which new geniuses and new leaders in the automotive world can emerge.

See below what this Rimac factory in Croatia looks like in a drone tour that flies inside.
