The President of Poland wants the possibility of legal abortion in cases of fatal embryonic defects – Abroad – News

If such a bill is passed, it will again be possible to terminate a pregnancy in cases “when it is known that the baby is unable to live after birth”, but children with Down syndrome will be protected, the statement said on Duda’s website.

Last Thursday, the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that abortion due to permanent, congenital embryonic defects, including Down syndrome and deadly diseases, was illegal because the constitution protected the life of every individual.

The decision of the court is de facto abortion ban, as the condition rejected by the court is the basis for almost all legal abortions in Poland.

The court’s decision has provoked protests, and its members have also turned against churches, embracing churches with slogans and holding protests in churches.

The de facto ban on abortion and the subsequent protests have highlighted the divisions in Polish society.

On Thursday night, activists of the far-right youth organization All-Polish Youth attacked women who took part in the protests in several cities, including Wroclaw, Poznan and Białystok.

Meanwhile, Yaroslav Kaczynski, leader of Poland’s ruling national conservative party Law and Justice (PiS), called on his supporters to take to the streets to defend the churches. Many interpreted Kaczynski’s remarks as permission to turn against the protesters.
