The feminicide of Diana Rosa Cervantes Mejías in Camagüey, which occurred on January 2, was confirmed this Thursday by independent journalist Henry Constantín, who interviewed a relative of the victim and provided more details about the crime. That of Cervantes has been the first case of sexist violence recorded by independent media in 2024, after the previous year’s balance sheet quantified 87 crimes against women on the Island.
According to one note posted on Facebook by Cuba Time, half directed by Constantín, Cervantes met his ex-partner last Tuesday in the house where they used to live together before separating, and which is located “near the factory known as La Baldosera, in the Juruquey neighborhood,” in the head city.
The victim, 29 years old, was brutally beaten by the alleged aggressor, whose identity corresponds to the initials CAG. The aggressor, identified as Oreste Tamayo, and from whom he intended to separate, was a worker at the province’s Electric Company, several media outlets reported at the time.
Guerra’s has been the last name added to the record of 87 femicides – more than double those quantified a year before (34) – that occurred on the Island in 2023 and confirmed by independent platforms and media.
This type of crime, which is not classified in the Penal Code, has managed to attract the attention of the population of the Island, who demand a response from the authorities in the face of the “wave of violence” that the country is suffering and that has claimed the lives of dozens of women.
For their part, both the official press and the authorities maintain their distance from femicides, and their promises to prevent and quantify cases of sexist violence in real time remain unfulfilled.
